How visa categories actually differ from each other
Student, skilled, sponsored and partner visas are not different flavours of the same thing. Each is answering a different question about you.
People often describe visas the way they describe products — as options to compare on price and speed. It is a more useful habit to ask what question each category is actually answering.
What each category is really testing
A student visa tests whether you are a genuine temporary entrant undertaking genuine study. A skilled visa tests whether your age, occupation, qualifications and experience meet a points or nomination threshold. A sponsored visa tests whether an employer can support your position and whether you meet that occupation's requirements. A partner visa tests the genuineness and continuity of a relationship. These are not interchangeable questions.
Why the distinction matters practically
Because the evidence that proves one thing does not automatically prove another. A strong employment history helps a skilled case; it does very little for a partner case, which turns on relationship evidence instead. Understanding which question your circumstances actually answer well is the first step in choosing a pathway.
Where this goes wrong
The most common mistake is choosing a category because it sounds achievable, then trying to make the facts fit it. It is more reliable to establish the facts first and let them point to the category that suits them.
Every migration case deserves a strategy.
