What a graduate (485) visa actually gives you
A 485 grants time and work rights. It does not grant a pathway. What you do inside it is what creates one, or does not.
The post-study work visa is frequently described as a step toward permanent residence. It is more accurate to describe it as a window in which a pathway can be built, if the right things happen inside it.
What it actually confers
The 485 gives you lawful status and, depending on your stream, a set period of open work rights. That is the entire entitlement. It does not itself count toward any points test, and it does not create eligibility for a further visa on its own.
What determines whether it leads anywhere
Whether the time is used to gain relevant, well-documented experience in an assessable occupation; whether a skills assessment is completed while it is still straightforward to gather the evidence; and whether English and other requirements are met before the clock runs down. These are decisions, not defaults.
The mistake we see most often
Treating the 485 as a holding pattern rather than a working period. By the time people start planning seriously, months of the window are already gone and options that were available at the start have narrowed.
Know your options before you make your next move.
