What a bridging visa holds open, and what it does not
A bridging visa keeps you lawful while a decision is pending. It rarely gives you everything your substantive visa did, and the differences matter.
Bridging visas are transitional by design, and the detail people miss is that "lawful" does not mean "unchanged." What a bridging visa permits depends on its subclass and the conditions attached to it, and those can differ meaningfully from the visa it followed.
What can change
Work rights, travel rights and study conditions can all be more restricted on a bridging visa than they were on the substantive visa before it. Travelling overseas on some bridging visas can also affect your ability to re-enter or can end the bridging visa altogether.
What determines the conditions
Generally, the type of application that triggered the bridging visa and the conditions that applied to your last substantive visa. This is worth confirming precisely rather than assuming continuity.
Why this matters for planning
If you are relying on work rights or travel during a bridging period — for a job, a family situation, or anything time-sensitive — that needs to be checked against your specific bridging visa grant, not against what felt normal on your previous visa.
A refusal is not the time to guess your next move.
